SVATOPLUK (830 env.-894), roi de Grande-Moravie (869 env.-894)

D’abord protégés de l’Empire franc, les Slaves de Moravie constituèrent un État indépendant au IXe siècle. En 869, Svatopluk succède à son oncle Rostislav qui, tombé aux mains de Louis le Germanique, avait été aveuglé. Svatopluk étend la principauté jusqu’à l’Oder à l’ouest et au Hron à l’est. Dans un premier temps, il accorde son appui à Méthode, missionnaire byzantin qu’avait appelé Rostislav, vers 860, pour faire pièce au clergé franc d’obédience romaine. Puis Svatopluk revient au catholicisme et se réconcilie avec le clergé franc. Il interdit l’usage du slavon et impose la liturgie latine: choix culturel de première importance pour l’histoire ultérieure des Slaves du Nord. En 885, le pape Étienne V condamne lui-même l’usage de la liturgie slavonne et les disciples de Méthode sont chassés du pays. La mort de Svatopluk sonne le glas de la Grande-Moravie: les querelles entre ses trois fils favorisent les invasions hongroises qui détruiront l’Empire slave.
